I was asked once ‘why resistance is so important to the pilates work’ ?. Simply answered muscle need resistance and overload to build more strength. What i will add to this comment is the ability for one to create more muscle overload by contracting harder into the movement to create the perception of increased resistance empowering combination of both your mind and body. It is a conscious movement strategy.. The conscious control of knowing the resistance of the bands and obtaining how your body is working under these resistive conditions is part of the self mastery of the Pilates Method.

Just as a teacher will change springs to facilitate or hinder an exercise move the different coloured bands are graded in strength and can be used in the same manner. It’s important to point out here that lighter resistance do not always mean easier and stronger resistance does not always mean increased gains. Ask me more if you want.

Because Pilates is a whole body workout and as we are indeed a whole body the focus on the upper middle and lower parts of the body should be and is provided within the work and included in the accessories of the TRNR system.

To challenge the lower body use the ankle or foot straps. To focus on the upper body grab for the handles in the pack and allow the upper body to punch out a few dynamic moves without the distraction or discomfort from the hands. Anything and everything is possible.

I know this because I use this philosophy everyday. I teach my family, friends, staff and clients to latch on to the idea of everyday pilates and that this is a forever thing.

The stretch band is how i can sustain a stretch long enough to obtain a productive release and stretch combination within muscles.

So stretching is the new education for our nervous system. Well in fact it always have been it’s just an era for that to be recognised.

When discussing the type of properties needed to personally achieve a satisfactory environment for my muscles to relax and release into, I am acutely aware of the combination of both strength and support as well as a sense of freedom and space. Space being a contemporary term for the body to feel like it still has room to move even at an end of range position.

As a teacher I am aiming to achieve this with my clients. I will create a situation for the stretch to be held and sustained at the same time being very aware of the space and opportunity for them to be able to have variation or play within the end range stretch.

If one could have a continues feedback loop that could support this concept it would be a huge benefit. That loop might provide optimal communication between neuromuscular pathways within the body. This physiological response to the tissues and surrounding structures of a joint might produce an increase in obtainable flexibly.
